Caltex FreshStop crowned International Convenience Retailer of the Year in 2013

Caltex FreshStop has won the International Convenience Retailer of the Year Award in the 2013 Insight NACS Convenience Retail Awards for its innovation on the forecourt in South Africa.

Judges voted Caltex FreshStop number one for the format it first introduced in February 2009 and its new flagship branch – Airport City – opened close to Cape Town International Airport in November 2012.

The Airport City forecourt site and c-store has been designed with travellers and commuters in mind and offers a wide range of products and services.

There is a full range of hot food plus a large seating area with plasma screens, where customers can catch up on the latest international news or relax with a cup of coffee. A strong financial performance impressed the judging panel.

In its first three months of trading, the FreshStop Airport City site attracted 160,542 customers and achieved sales of R4,087,292. A modern layout appeals to shoppers and the signage portrays a fresh and youthful image.

For business people, there is free Wi-Fi, boardroom and meeting room facilities for hire, plus a car wash and valet services to help them make the most efficient use of their time.

Joseph Bona, a judge and president, retail division, CBX, USA, said: “I just think it really represents a global solution to convenience with a fresh offer in a good/clean and simple design that is easily replicable and it’s very well executed.”

Seamus Smith, panelist and managing director, PayPoint Network, agreed. “Caltex FreshStop is a new format store that really meets the needs of its customers,” he said.“The highly transient fuel site appears to have the very best mix, meeting every customer need whilst still able to support local community.

The store also shows a willingness to use latest technology with digital marketing leading the way.”Caltex FreshStop is the fifth retailer to win the Insight NACS International Convenience Retailer of the Year Award.
